About Duncan L. McCulloch
I like war, I’m a huge military nerd, and I like writing, so it was inevitable that I’d eventually start a blog. I’ve been talking about it for years, I finally pulled the pin on it, so WELCOME!
If you found this, you most likely heard of me from Reddit, where I’ve posted for years as Duncan-M. I was quite active a while back on War College, as well as more recently on Credible Defense and Ukraine Russia Report, not to mention the occasional posts in the past on Ask Historians.
My background is decade plus of US military service as an enlisted infantryman, including the privilege to sacrificing mind and body in some of America’s 2000s era foreign misadventures. With great foresight, I earned a college degree double majoring in history and Pol Sci, preparing me for a life where I was imminently capable of answering vague trivia and little else. I have a young family that I love and a satisfying career doing something shockingly different than anything in my past, giving me little time and opportunity outside of the internet to discuss my interests with others. C’est La Vie.
I consider myself a permanent student of history and warfare, always striving to learn more. My areas of focus relate to modern warfare (especially ground operations), the Russo-Ukraine War (which I follow pretty closely), and Ancient Roman history (with an emphasis on the Late Republic).
I don’t discuss domestic US politics nor religion. Everyone believes in what they believe, I have no desire to slay anyone’s sacred cows and alter their ideologies and belief systems.
My intent with this blog is to pass on what I’ve learned over the years in a manner that’s relatable, easy to comprehend, maybe a bit entertaining too, while satisfying my id to educate others and express myself with minimal restraint. Debating in discussion forums wasn’t a good fit, I think a blog will work better as a mostly one-way lecture platform.
My totally unrealistic professional goal in life is to write full-time. Minus winning the lottery, it’s not going to happen. But I do want to try to keep the articles flowing on this blog, and maybe, hopefully when I get some free time I can write and publish a fictional novel series set in Ancient Rome that I’ve been toying with and outlining for over a decade now. Some day…
Warning: I cuss, I use hyperbole, I exaggerate, and sometimes I get emotional in my writing. Gasp! Some people like my writing style, others don’t. If you don’t like it, leave. If you liked how I wrote on Reddit, you’ll like this because now I have no mods restraining me!
